On the occasion of the XIV edition of the Italian language week in the world (20-25 October 2014),

La Dante organizes the following events:

Festival of Ideas events
Rossini and the bel canto school

Weds 22nd October 6-7pm at the Conference Room – Cambridge Central Library

The undisputed king of bel canto, Rossini created some of the most beloved operas of the Italian repertoire. In this course we explore his enduring comedies – from The Barber of Seville to La Cenerentola – while also discovering the dramatic operas he created for Naples, and his final works for Paris. We follow Rossini through his career and enjoy the most virtuous vocal displays in the opera world.

Cambridge University Dante’s Paradise: imagining the divine

Venue: Robinson College chapel, Grange Road, CB3 9AN Drop in, no need to book Five artists – working in glass, photography, Renaissance methods, surrealist-pop, and an Outsider artist – present new work created in response to Dante’s Divine Comedy, revealing the workings of the artistic imagination. La Dante Film Club
Tuesday 28th October, 6pm: What a beautiful day (Italian: Che bella giornata)

A funny Italian comedy with the actor Checco Zalone (Luca Medici), released in 2011. The film was met with high commercial success. In just its second week, it reached $42.2 million in box-office revenue, topping Life Is Beautiful to set the all-time national earnings record for an Italian film. In its opening weekend, the comedy surpassed Avatar for the most sales in the first 3 days of release, reaching $9.4 million – 6.00 Sign in, enjoy complimentary snacks and cappuccino . La Dante Film Club
Tuesday 23th September, 6pm: Life Is Beautiful (Italian: La vita è bella) Italian comedy- drama film directed by and starring Roberto Benigni. Benigni plays Guido Orefice, a Jewish Italian book shop owner, who must employ his fertile imagination to shield his son from the horrors of internment in a Nazi concentration camp. Part of the film came from Benigni’s own family history; before Roberto’s birth, his father had survived three years of internment at the Begren-Belsen concentration camp. The film was a critical and financial success, winning Benigni the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 71st Academy Awards as well as the Academy Award for Best Original Dramatic Score and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

New: Passeggiate Dietro le Scene Al Fitzwilliam Museum Italian Galleries Highlight Tour Friday 14 March 2014, 1-2pm, the Fitzwilliam Museum Learn all about the highlight pieces of art (paintings, sculpture, furniture, maiolica and glass) in the Italian Galleries at the Fitzwilliam Museum from the Keeper of the Applied Arts Department and practice your Italian at the same time! Max: 20 people per tour; £5 per person

Science Festival 2014

A journey of Discovery: Marco Polo. Quaderni veneziani. Friday 14th March, 5-7pm at the Hester Adrian Centre. Every year the University of Cambridge holds a Science Festival which gives the public the opportunity to explore Cambridge Science. Marco Paolini’s theatre is history, poetry and places. In this filmed monologue the Italian actor talks about Marco Polo and his relationship with Venice. In Italian, suitable for all.

Science Festival 2014

A Language Experience: Project Nim. 15th March, 2-4pm at the Hester Adrian Centre. This film focuses on Project Nim, a research project that was mounted ton determine whether a primate raised in close contact with humans could develop a limited “language” based on American Sign Language. In English, suitable for a young audience aged 12+ and adults.
