Every year the University of Cambridge holds a Festival of Ideas to showcase inspirational talks, performances, films and other creative displays.

Simonetta Agnello Hornby, an Italian lawyer who has been living in London since 1970, becomes a writer by chance at the age of 55. In 2000, on September 2nd, at Fiumicino Airport, waiting for the flight for London, La Mennulara’s plot appears to her like a revelation. The author will talk about her novels (five settled in Sicily, one in London) and about the evolution of her fiction with particular attention to the emigrant’s language.Saturday 2nd Nov., Central Library, 5-6 pm
THE OPERAS OF VERDI AND WAGNER
with opera singer ANDRES HERNANDEZ SALAZAR
2013 marks the joint bicentenary of two of the most influential composers in 19th century opera: Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner came to epitomise Italian and German Romantic opera, respectively. In this talk, Andrés compares and contrasts their very different operatic outputs.
