They are two different exams but both valid for Italian citizenship application. The difference is:
  • PLIDA B1: In this exam, all 4 abilities will be tested (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening) and it’s a complete language certification, so apart from being used for citizenship purposes, it can be used even for working purposes, academic purposes and so on.
  • PLIDA B1 CITTADINANZA: In this exam will be tested just the oral ability and knowledge of the candidates. For this reason, this exam it’s not considered as a full language certification, but it can be used just to apply for citizenship. It cannot be used for other purposes.

The minimum level required to apply for Italian citizenship is the B1 level.

How long does it take to reach a full B1 level?

Please find some examples of the PLIDA exam on this page.  The exam usually starts in the morning at 9:00 am with the written part of the exam (Writing, Reading and Listening abilities). From 12:30 noon will start the oral part of the exam (Speaking). The oral exam will be in pairs and it will last around 25 minutes for each pair. Initially, you will be asked some personal questions to get to know each other a little better, which however will not be evaluated, and once the cognitive part is finished, the real PLIDA Exam will start. It is composed of 2 parts. In the first one, the two candidates have to hold a conversation for 10 minutes about a topic or a situation chosen by the examiner. The second part will take place individually, the candidate will have a monologue directly with the examiner for about 7/8 minutes. Please allocate a day for the exam.

If you fail a session, what does it happen?

To pass the exam you need to achieve a minimum of 18 out of 30 points for each of the four abilities test. If you do not pass all abilities, you have 18 months, since the first test, to retake the failed abilities on other exam’s sessions.

When will the exam results arrive?

The results will arrive within 60 working days, more and less, from the exam’s date. If you wish to get it earlier, you can ask for an Urgent correction “correzione urgente” with an additional cost. In that case, the results should arrive from Rome in two/three weeks.
